    Well done! Black Flag were a major chapter in my life...and still are. I've seen Henry's spoken word show twice and proudly display the bars on my arm. I'm an old fart now but i remain a huge fan of this music era

    The REALLY funny thing? There's an "f bomb" in the background that's not part of the lyrics. The drummer messes up and yells it out.

    It would have been nice if the video showed some of the alternate lyrics people were claiming it contained, as well as a better shot of the actual original lyrics beyond a quick pan of the sheet music. Now I have to go do research...

      I debated this a lot. It felt like it would be redundant if I showed more of the lyrics beyond what’s in the Coup de Ville movie clip.

    How much money did we spend on this?

    • @amthomas101
      @amthomas101 Місяць тому

      I mean, it terms of material specifically for this project, technically $10 on a copy of an LP by The Kingsmen that I had planned to use and then didn’t. That is if you don’t count the computer, the software, and the headphones. Otherwise, the cost was in time. Even the book I read was available to read for free on the Internet Archive.

      @@amthomas101I'm pretty sure he meant we (the taxpayers) spent on the investigations. But to answer that question: $0. Government agencies have to account what they spent the $ on. And "a coup to overthrow the government of (insert country name here)" isn't going to fly. But they still spent the money on the coup, now they just have to fabricate cover stories. Like this one

    This is a thoroughly well executed piece of work. Talk about making the most of the material available. Parts 1 and 2 do exactly that. The more I watched, the more I saw parallels between Greg Ginn and Tom Scholtz of Boston. Unexpected, and probably unorthodox, but there you go.

    It was Chisester Bell who worked with Tainer. Their cylinder was made of a sort of cardboard covered with ozocrite wax and the groove was cut vertically. Edison's cylinders from 1888 were a solid wax-like metalic soap.

    I wish we had the 1980s bands to tear apart the political landscape today which seems to have free will that it otherwise would have to keep in check. All of these bands would have roasted the recent Presidents and many of their stances, used legendary artwork for covers etc. Reagan got the brunt of it for being in the wrong place at the right time.

    Beginning of '79-summer - start of BF, release of the Panic- nervous breakdown; then Reyes (chavo) replaces Morris, Jealous again comed out & he splits; fall of '80 Dez joins , 6pck single & Louie Louie released... Aug '81 Rollins (Hank Garfield) becomes 4th/final singer. 1982 was their peak year w/ debut l.p Damaged & T.v party single. The band soldiers on through 83. End of year the 2nd l.p My War recorded as 3piece w/ Ginn, Rollins & new/final (somewhat) drummer Billy Stevenson from the Descendents. '84- Kira Roessler (sister of Paul from the Screamers & 45 Grave) joins as final (somewhat "-") bassist & 3rd l.p Slip it in;; followed in '85 by Loose Nut. After their 5th/final l.p In my head their rhythm section departs & the band slowly crumbles, their final rhythm section was a couple random dudes & they disband by beginning of '86.

  • @kookadams85

    The band was Panic til the beginning of '79. When they recorded Nervous breakdown they were Panic & changed their name, put out the record & did their 1st gig. They didn't have a legitimate singer til Dez in late '80/ In Aug '81 Garfield/Rollins joined & solidified the lineup. '82 was their apex w/ the debut Damaged & the TV party single. 2 albums in '84- My War & Slip it in w/ Roessler & Stevenson replacing McDaniel & Cadena; 2 more l.p's in '85- Loose Nut & In my head. When Bill & Kira left the band withered into 💩. By the beginning of '86 they were over.

    The story about the band eating other people's food off their plates after they had left the Mexican restaurant, something which apparently happened somewhat regularly, shows how far off the beaten path Black Flag were, and not in a good way. It reminds me of the way Charles Manson used to send his girls out to collect expired food from grocery store dumpsters, and he was proud of it and promoted the fact, as Rollins does here. Of course there was a direct connection between Manson and Rollins; they exchanged letters in the 80s and Rollins eventually produced an album for Manson which was never released.

    • @amthomas101
      @amthomas101 Місяць тому

      I disagree that Rollins promotes it. It is clearly described here as an act of sheer desperation.

    • @briteness
      @briteness Місяць тому

      @@amthomas101 I see your point. He doesn't promote it in the sense of telling others to go out and do it., but it is a part of the whole story of the band as a spartan, communal, almost cult-like organization living at the margins. That is a true story, but it was also an important element in how people perceived the band. It seems pretty clear that Ginn and Rollins understood the value of that overarching myth, which still resonates today. Eating leftover food off people's plates gets talked about because it fits into the narrative, which was promoted.

  • @briteness

    "Why are the police against you?" "It's probably because they're scared that it represents change." Wrong. It was because the scene they deliberately stirred up was violent. People were hurt and property was damaged. The cops probably should've cracked down harder than they did. They could have been thrown in jail for inciting a riot on numerous occasions. And again, remember that the violence was deliberately cultivated and emphasized by Ginn and the band. They wanted the publicity that came with it.

      The police in LA were already particularly violent. This is the police force that started to utilize military-grade equipment (I believe this is where the SWAT Team originated) in their response to civil action. Black Flag did not discourage the violence as much as they could have, but the police violence I would never blame on the band or the people attending the shows.
